What is the ReShape gastric balloon procedure?

The ReShape gastric balloon is an FDA-approved nonsurgical approach to weight loss that uses two connected, saline-filled balloons to “fill up” the stomach space so patients feel full faster and consume fewer calories as a result. The balloons remain in place for up to six months and are used for patients with a lower body mass index (BMI), typically between 30 and 40, helping them lose about twice as much weight as diet and exercise alone.* The ReShape system can also be a good option for patients who do qualify for weight-loss surgery.

What happens during the ReShape procedure?

The ReShape balloons are placed in the stomach during an outpatient procedure that takes about 20 to 30 minutes to perform. During the procedure, patients are lightly sedated to help them relax and the balloons are inserted into the stomach through the mouth via a long, slim, flexible tube. Once the balloons are in place, they’re filled with saline solution. The amount of saline can be adjusted to suit the needs of the patient and typically ranges from 13 ounces to 23 ounces.

Will I be able to feel the balloons?

Once the balloons are in place, patients may experience some minor sensations of bloating or distension as the stomach adjusts to them, but these effects are temporary. After the brief period of adjustment, the balloons typically are not felt while in place. Patients may be asked to consume a light or modified diet during the first few days after the balloons are inserted to reduce any feelings of bloating or nausea that may occur. Avoiding caffeine and carbonated beverages during this time is also important for patients who feel bloated.

What happens during treatment with the ReShape gastric balloon?

The balloons remain in place for six months, helping patients eat less so they lose weight.* At the end of the six-month period six months, the balloons are removed during a similar outpatient procedure. While the balloons are in place and for six months afterward, patients receive personalized coaching and nutritional counseling to help them learn healthy eating habits so they can keep the weight off once the balloons are removed.*
